The Elsecar Heritage Railway is delighted to offer you the chance to take control of one of our full size heritage railway locomotives. Experience the excitement of driving/firing a steam locomotive along the length of our line for the duration of your stay.

This is your chance to take the controls of the most powerful UK industrial steam locomotive ever built, Peckett No. 2150 Mardy Monster! With our challenging 1 in 37 gradient an unforgettable steam experience on the footplate is guaranteed at the Elsecar Heritage Railway.

1 Hour Experience - £119

2 Hour Experience - £219

 

All courses include full safety briefings, and a chance to both drive and fire the locomotive.

 

We will try to make your time spent with us here at Elsecar not only enlightening and enjoyable, but absolutely unforgettable. We have, in the Mardy Monster, the most powerful UK industrial steam locomotive ever built, and we will aim to put her at your command before the end of your stay with us.

On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and introduced to your footplate team who look after you during your stay.

You will then be introduced to the Mardy Monster and will help get steam up and check her over for departure

Under supervision you will allowed to assist in fireman’s duties in the yard and along the main line

You will then be invited to learn about basic driving techniques, and to practice starting and stopping safely. You may then go on to perform shunting in the yard or go back out onto the main line, where you may be given the opportunity to take the controls for the daunting 1 in 37 climb from Hemingfield Basin.

You will be accompanied and assisted by experienced staff throughout who will keep you safe, and answer all of your questions. All courses are subject to availability. In the event that the Mardy Monster is unavailable, an alternative steam locomotive may be used for the course. If necessary the Railway may postpone course dates without notice.
